How to redact (black out) a PDF

Can the blacked-out text be recovered?

No — unlike drawing a black rectangle in an editor, redacted pages are flattened to images, so the text underneath no longer exists in the file.

Why did my redacted pages turn into images?

Flattening is what makes the removal real: the page is re-rendered without the hidden content, so text on those pages is no longer selectable.
